And how much would that be? I tried using a distel (low and slow, of course), but it didn't seem to be very efficient for me. I had the "legs" of the distel tied as short as I could to attach to my biner, but it still ended up that when I stood (using a footlock technique), almost half of the distance I stood up took up the slack in the distel system, then it was able to advance the knot about the last 12 inches of my standing movement. Is that the way it is supposed to work, or do I just need to keep working on my setup somehow?
By the way, do you hold the down above the distel in order to stabilize yourself when you stand? I felt like I didn't have anywhere to put my hands to hold onto the rope.
I like the idea of it being self advancing, maybe that would be away around my problem.
Thanks, Patrick

patrick, i wasn't footlocking with this set up, just body thrusting.
to be honest i have only juyst started using a distel myself. I know what you mean about effort to take up the slack first, but with this set up, as long as you keep pulling it wont slacken off, only when you stop will it slacken off.

When I slept overnight in the treeboat 2 weeks ago, I used a similar setup. I put a pulley on TOP of the distel, too. A carabiner was clipped to the pulley, with a loop runner hanging from the pulley. The distel was tied well above me, out of my reach, but pulling on the loop runner would allow me a controlled descent.

haven't tried the v.t much yet. expecting a bit of tennex in the post tomorrow so gonna experiment.
I was thinking, if you left the butterfly knot done up after you switched back to split tail would it come undone, probably would, but maybe could use another knot in place. that way it would make the job of switching over when you needed a lot easier

Is this self advancing setup anything fundamentally different than the (Dan) HouseMOVER?
I havent tried either....

I've lost the _link_ to the page describing it, but maybe somebody else can find it?
