Sitka’s carabiner thread raises a good question. . .
What carabiner (and locking mechanism) do “you” prefer for climbing?

I myself have grown quite fond of the Petzl AM’D for direct connection of climbing line to saddle and the Petzl WILLIAM for connecting daisy ropes, grillons, and such, where a larger biner is preferred. As for the locking mechanism? Always the TRIACT type.

Just wondering what’s popular with climbers here at TCI forum.

Well, climb right is definately my favorite.

But I also like my petzl william ball lock. I have been told not to use it because the locking mechanism is prone to failure.

I like the Kong pear, but it doesn't meet ANSI standards.

I like my DMM, but its too thick for some of my gear.

I'm thinking seriously about getting an ISC mighty mouse because its so small. Anyone opinions on this one?

Not all Petzl ball locks are defective, look on the Petzl site for specifics.

The Kong HMS pear triact is my sentimental favorite, the first biner I climbed on. The shape is comfortable to grab. The pear is excellent with a closed hitch for a lanyard or for your main climbing hitch. It's only 1 kn below ANSI (I think), that's good enough for rec climbing.

Petzl AM'D (triact) is my bread and butter biner. I hate the ball locks, maybe 'cause I'm a lefty.

I like and use Petzl OKs and Attache's almost exclusively.

I fully expect the ANSI police to cite me on this since they're both screw locks.

Nothing wrong with screwlocks, many rec climbers use them. ANSI guidelines are work climbing guidelines, are useful to rec climbers but not required since there is no governing body or official standard. Informed common sense is the guideline for rec climbers.

I use a DMM Wales steel D biner, 45KN.

nukeproof, even though its a screwgate. I've had ruinning rope run over the screwgate, with ZERO opening or unthreading.
