Duh, after I posted I realized they're probably high carbon steel and resistant to filing down. Maybe just leave as is and try a coating of the liquid rubber goop. -moss

...and here's one I made from a coathanger and some garden wire for a few pence. Note how I've twisted the arms to one side to make a kind of swastika on plan view. That helps the grapnel latch onto the line when it is swinging past it.
What do you think - any comments?

Adding the twist seems like it would snag the line easier. I'm going to see if I can tweak my New Tribe grapple into the same configuration.
