I noticed some slipping while climbing last week a little for me but mostly for my kids I've been using tauntline hitch only because that is what I learned to climb with. The rope I have is the new england safety blue, I think this slipping is due to my kids lightweight and the rope is brand new and feels really stiff as opposed to what I remember. Is it normal for hitches to slip on new rope?

It is normal for a rope to slip specially if brand new. Also that taughtline hitch is not very good at holding. Try using the Blake Hitch and add extra wraps five or six and two under specially for the kids but do not make it too hard for them to be able to push the knot up while climbing. As the rope get softer with use the knots will hold better and slip less.
