The danger of loosing control of my gear is offset by the cost of paying the airlines bounty.
When some arbo friends of mine from Denmark came over to climb in California a few years ago I UPS'd my portaledge and Treeboats to Eureka. they ended up spending the weekend in Fresno and we spent the weekend sleeping on the ground

I get tight-jawed when I'm told that I'm two pounds overweight, well, attually, my luggage. When I point out the overweight people with huge, but underweight, luggage, I ask why the airlines don't have a scale for the passenger and all gear to weigh. Until then I have to shuffle gear or tear pages off the book I'm reading

Not really
