TCI Classes in New England This Summer

Have you wanted to learn how to climb trees with a rope and harness but couldn't afford the travel or spare the time? Wanted to learn more advanced techniques, but just haven't had the chance? If you live in the Northeast, now's your opportunity -- close to home!

Tree climbing instructors Peter "Treeman" Jenkins (TCI founder) and Tom "Lorax" Coffin (the very first TCI student) will be coming to Greenfield, Massachusetts at the end of July to teach.* Greenfield is in western Massachusetts, a drive within range of anywhere in the Northeast. We'll have the use of a site with great teaching trees, and there are plenty of places to eat and stay nearby.

Registration is open! Sign up now for our two-day Basic Tree Climbing Course (BTCC) or "Beyond the Basics Course" -- and spend the rest of the summer in the treetops!

General Information
Preparing a second pitchThe BTCC is the same course we teach in Atlanta: you'll learn everything you need to know in order to go out and climb on your own safely. If you're a newly-trained climber, you may want to take our "Beyond the Basics" class for more advanced climbing skills. Each course will have a maximum of five students and will be taught by both instructors.

Class dates are scheduled as follows:

Tuesday-Wednesday, July 28-29
Friday-Saturday, July 31-August 1
Monday-Tuesday, August 3-4
Thursday-Friday, August 6-7
Additional courses dates possible (see below)

If there is enough demand, we will teach a "Beyond the Basics" course August 6-7 (depending upon BTCC registration) and/or August 9-10.

Tuition for all classes is $550 per student, higher than it is in Atlanta to help pay travel and housing costs for Peter and Tom.

Interested? Please  This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it for complete details and registration materials. We will accept students on a first-come, first-served basis with a paid deposit of $250. TCI's classes are "fun," "challenging," and "worth every dime," say former students. Don't miss this opportunity to come hang out and learn with us!

Learning the Ropes

Ainsley.JPGTree climbing is an adventure. It starts with placing a rope high in a tree and tying a series of knots. Then you're ready to climb. But your journey is just beginning! When you get to your first branch, it's time to place your rope over a higher branch. You can go to the top or as high as you like! Climbing requires skill, patience, energy, and a certain amount of courage. But the fun and rewards of your accomplishments will be well worth your efforts.

If you find that once you've climbed high in a tree you're eager for more time up there, you may want to take one or more of our courses! TCI has several classes and programs designed for any level of climber:

  • For the inexperienced person who wants to be able to climb safely on his or her own;
  • For those who have taken a basic tree climbing course and want to learn advanced climbing skills; and
  • For those who want to become a recreational tree climbing facilitator and/or instructor.
Each of our courses is described in detail. Click on a link to find out more!

Beginners' (Introductory) Climb -- Fun on a Sunday!

Welcome to our tree climbing school! The TCI Beginners' Climb is meant for the person with no tree climbing skills. We make it safe and easy! You will love the "Peter Pan" effect of floating on air while suspended from a rope! All equipment is supplied; all you need is loose clothing (T-shirt and long pants recommended), light shoes (closed-toe preferable), and some extra energy. During the summer, it's always more comfortable under Sueño's branches. In the Fall when temperatures start start to cool down, please dress in layers that can be shed as you start to warm up with exercise. Make sure to bring a camera--your family and friends will want to see pictures!

When you arrive, the instructors will have looped all the ropes over branches and tied all the knots. We'll show you how the climbing system works, how to tie a safety knot, and how to descend safely. All you have to do is slip into a harness and helmet and up you'll go! Once aloft, you'll be able to get to those first few branches and "hang out" with no trouble at all! Climbers can climb twice or even three times, depending on how many people are participating that day.

Do you think you won't be able to do this because you're out of shape? Think again! There have been only a small number of first-time climbers who couldn't get up into our tree. Take a chance and try something different!

Dates:  First and third Sundays of every month (except December, January and February), weather permitting. You can always check our home page to find out if a particular day's class is cancelled. No reservations are required, but please let us know ahead of time if you are planning to bring a group of 6 or more.

Time: 2 - 5 p.m.

Location: Blackburn Park, entrance at 3530 Ashford-Dunwoody Rd. (at Johnson Ferry), Atlanta, GA 30319 (maps).

Cost: $20 per climber. Anyone age five and older is welcome to participate, but note that very young children may have difficulty with the sequencing skills needed for climbing.)

Group Events for Beginners
climbing_pics/Kids in Nimrod.JPG
Kids hang out in Nimrod, our first climbing tree

The TCI group climb is a special event for birthday parties and scouts, school, camp, community and church groups—anyone who wants to organize a few hours of tree climbing for a large number of participants. It can be scheduled any day of the week except when other classes are held, depending upon the availability of our instructors. All group events are held at Blackburn Park (maps) in DeKalb County.

Private group climbing events are just like our public Sunday afternoon Beginners' Climbs. When you arrive, all ropes will be set up. You'll get brief instruction with a climbing demonstration. Then you’ll put on harnesses and helmets and be ready to climb! Our group climbs are staffed with TCI-trained instructors who want each participant get the most out of their climbing experience. It’s a fun day for everybody!

Cost:
2 hrs @ $20.00 per climber, $200.00 (minimum) up to 12 climbers ($75 deposit)
2-1/2 to 3 hrs @ $20.00 per climber, $250.00 (minimum) over 12 climbers ($100 deposit)
Special deposits will be required for groups of over 50 participants.
The balance will be due on the day of the event. Please make the deposit check out to Tree Climbers International and send it to:TCI, PO Box 5588, Atlanta, GA 31107-5588.

In the unfortunate event of rain, we will work with you to reschedule your event. We do not schedule group climbs during the winter months (December-February). It's no fun for new climbers when it's too cold!

TCI's Basic Tree Climbing Course (BTCC)

We have openings in our Thursday-Friday, June 18-19 class. Contact us for information and/or registration.

TCI's BTCC is a two-day course designed to teach all the skills you need to climb a large tree using the doubled rope technique (DRT). Information about selecting a good climbing tree and assessing its condition is presented in detail. You will learn climbing technique and how to tie all the knots, repeating each knot many times to learn "muscle memory." You'll learn rules for personal safety, as well as guidelines about how to respect and protect the trees you climb. Each class has a maximum of only three students (more when our instructor has qualified assistance) so each student can receive lots of personal attention and help. [Pictured here is a class whose students included a mother and her three teenage daughters.]

throwing into open fieldWhen you finish this course, you will take a climbing test. Passing it shows that you are ready to go out and climb on your own. Students will receive a TCI course diploma upon graduation.

This course is perfect not only for the recreational climber, but also for tree workers who want to learn entry-level climbing skills. Note, however, that we do not teach techniques for tree care, such as pruning, in this class.

Cost:  $475.00.

Course length:  2 days (16-18 hours of instruction)

Location:  Blackburn Park, entrance at 3530 Ashford-Dunwoody Rd. (at Johnson Ferry), Atlanta, GA 30319 (maps).

BTCC Refresher

TCI's “BTCC Refresher” is for the person who took a Basic Tree Climbing Course (BTCC) using doubled-rope technique but didn't climb immediately afterwards to consolidate what you learned, or maybe you find yourself out of practice. Now you want to climb again, but have forgotten some of the basic ingredients or just want to make sure you’re on the right track.

This one-day course reviews skills taught in the BTCC including knot tying, line placement, and climbing pitches. There will be plenty of time to practice with your instructor. You’ll be climbing Sueño in Blackburn Park, whose spreading branch structure provides lots of opportunities to test your skills. Participants will go home fully prepared to go out and climb again on their own safely and confidently.

Tuition: $225 (does not include food/lodging)

Location: Blackburn Park

Gear Rental (optional): $25

Prerequisite: BTCC and recent review of "Tree Climbing Basics" DVD (included with TCI BTCC course materials)

Beyond the Basics

Moss prepares a traverse--you'll learn how to do this, too!

Learn how to take on more difficult challenges in the canopy with confidence, and your climb will be more fun! This two-day course will excite novice and intermediate-level climbers who want to expand their abilities “beyond the basics”. Modules include skills and techniques for advanced line setting, branch walking, and split tail climbing; as well as positioning techniques and systems, lead climber skills, and others. You'll also learn how to set up a traverse, as our friend Moss is doing here. When you finish this class, you'll want to spend more time moving up, down and around in the canopy.

This course is taught by Peter "Treeman" Jenkins, TCI Founder and master instructor.

Tuition: $450 (does not include food/lodging)

Location: Taught at the TCI Hostel

Gear rental (optional): $25. We prefer to train you in your own saddle.

Prerequisite: BTCC or recent experience with the DRT climbing system presented in our "Tree Climbing Basics" DVD and instructor approval

Young Climbers: Only children over the age of 13 who are graduates of a basic tree climbing course will be accepted into this course. Adolescents 13 and 16 years old must take the course with a parent or guardian; ages 17-18 must be accompanied by a parent, who does not need to be taking the course him/herself.

Tree Climbing Gear and Gizmos

Have you ever found yourself thumbing through a tree climbing gear catalog and wondering if you should buy an item? “Everything looks so cool and intriguing, but will I use it? Is it right for me?” Many climbers have just enough equipment to get into and around in the treetops, and this is sufficient to meet their needs. However, when there are opportunities to check out other gear, their curiosity and excitement are irresistible. If you're one of these folks, this course is for you!

TCI has assembled a variety of tree climbing equipment to show our students. We have an array of ropes, saddles, helmets, throwline and throwline storage, ascending and descending tools, positioning tools, and line placement gear. Most of the gear we've chosen is familiar throughout the tree-climbing world and is used frequently by professional and/or recreational climbers at all levels of experience. However, lots of climbers have never seen nor, more importantly, had a chance to try out much of this gear. Participants can expect a fabulous couple of days as they experiment and compare.

Course length: 1-1/2 days (day 1 starts at 1 p.m., day 2 starts at 9 a.m.

Tuition: $275 (does not include food/lodging)

Location: Taught at the TCI Hostel

Prerequisite: BTCC, or recent experience with the DRT climbing system presented in our "Tree Climbing Basics" DVD and instructor approval

Maximum enrollment: 4

TCI Facilitator Program

Tree climbing facilitators are people who have been trained extensively to run beginners' tree climbing events. In many cases, people enroll in the TCI Facilitator Program in order to open their own tree climbing "groves," or schools. Facilitators lead many different types of group events. They set up the climbing tree with multiple climbing stations, orient the group and give a climbing demonstration, and then help others to experience the joys of tree climbing for themselves. The TCI Facilitator Program is taught by Peter Jenkins, TCI founder and master instructor.

hoisting_rescue_randy_1188349973.jpgBecoming a facilitator requires expertise in basic tree climbing techniques. It also takes patience, skill, and experience to safely manage lots of people in a tree at the same time. In the four-day TCI Facilitator Course, the first component of our Facilitator Program, students learn how to work with individuals and groups to run safe tree climbing events. They spend an entire day learning and practicing detailed rescue procedures with "Rescue Randy," our rescue dummy. Facilitator Course students must pass a climbing skills test and a written exam before they can enter the Facilitator Internship, the second component of our Program.

During the Facilitator Internship, students gain experience as Facilitators following the guidelines of Tree Climbers International. This way, when they finish their requirements and graduate from our program, we know that they are well-prepared and ready to put others "on rope" safely.
