TCI Beginners' Climbs

Come Climb with Us!

Try it for yourself! TCI Beginners Climbs are a great way for anyone to experience tree climbing. Whether you're a 5 year old child or an 85 year old "kid at heart," you can do this if you're in good health.

Our beginners' climbs are held on the 1st and 3rd Sundays of every month in Blackburn Park, unless the weather keeps us away. During the summer, it's usually cooler underneath our tree (Sueño, the beautiful willow oak in our video), and the breeze is delightful for a sojourn into her branches. Don't let the heat stop you -- come on out and join us!

2 - 5 p.m., only $20 per climber. No reservations necessary, but please call ahead if you want to bring a group of 6 or more.

See the video in full screen mode.

Newsflash

TCI's New Digs

TCI has a fabulous new home! The “TCI Training Center and Hostel” is a first-of-its-kind facility. Here students can stay overnight while they take advanced tree climbing classes in the very big and beautiful trees there, including "Echo" (a 53 inch diameter red oak, she matches the size of our first teaching tree, "Nimrod") and several other 90+ feet oaks and tulip poplars. The TCI Hostel has large teaching spaces indoors and outside where sessions can be taught in the event of rain. There are lots of routes to traverse through our small forest, and at night our tall trees offer lovely views of Atlanta's skyline. New adventures await those who haven't had an opportunity for these types of challenges!

The TCI Hostel, a small and casual but fully furnished house, offers all the comforts of home. No more reason to be alone and bored at night in a stuffy motel room. Students can sleep inside; or with know-how, set up a hammock to sleep peacefully in the treetops out back. No more reason to eat all your meals in restaurants, either! If you accept our invitation to stay, we have everything you need at a very affordable price. More hostel details

New Courses, Too!

TCI now offers an expanded teaching program which includes courses for beginners with limited experience and intermediate-level climbers: our "BTCC Refresher" and “Beyond the Basics” classes; and for any tree climber at all, our “Tree Climbing Gear and Gizmos” course. We also design customized classes for novice or experienced climbers who want to advance their capabilities in the trees or have specific skills they want to master.

All these opportunities to learn, in a setting which is absolutely perfect for training and relaxation, make TCI's Training Center and Hostel a great place to come and stay for a while!

Welcome to TCI--the world's first organization for recreational tree climbers

Tree Climbers International® is a worldwide organization of people who love to climb trees. We do this safely and with utmost care for the trees we climb. We want the sport of "rope and harness" tree climbing available so that everyone can experience the joy and wonder of seeing the world from the heights of the treetops!

Tree climbing is not just for children. It's for people of all ages who are young at heart and ready for the enjoyment trees can provide. Why don't you explore our website and learn more about it? Better yet, come experience the adventure with us!

TCI was started by Peter "Treeman" Jenkins, a retired rock and mountain climber-turned tree surgeon (now an ISA-Certified Arborist). Peter found that the equipment used in rock climbing did not always fit the needs of climbing something alive and fragile as a tree, and many of the rock climbers' techniques were downright dangerous in the treetops! It became clear to Peter that an organization was needed which could bring together people who love tree climbing, as well as train them in the techniques necessary to ensure that they climb safely and responsibly. In 1983, he founded Tree Climbers International and opened the world's first tree climbing school in Atlanta.

Every beginner who comes to our school gets a great tree-climbing experience in our Introductory Climb. For those who want to learn more, TCI's Basic Tree Climbing Course teaches safe tree-climbing techniques, which include our guidelines for protecting climbers and preventing injury to the trees being climbed. This course is taught by TCI-trained instructors in several locations in the U.S. and abroad. The TCI Facilitator Program and TCI Instructor Program are available to those enthusiasts who themselves want to become climbing teachers.

Through the years TCI has also written safety and training rules that have become standard for recreational tree climbers. Our organization's practices have made it possible for tens of thousands of people to adventure high in the treetops without injuring themselves or the trees being climbed. In fact, to this day there have not been any injuries in TCI-sponsored recreational tree climbing activities.

There is, nevertheless, a certain respect and a general duty of humanity that ties us, not only to beasts that have life and sense, but even to trees and plants.
