Calling all Australians' was created by aussietreeclimber
Hey Guys,
Finally got some time to read up on the postings. Since around 2005 when "Ziontree" and "bennysheehan" informed us of their Queensland residence I was wondering if any other australian climbers had joined the message board (such as myself)
I live in NSW about an hour from Sydney city in a little suburb, Galston.
One other Question, Do TCI have any conections to classes or such here?

Have you posted in the Tree World web site?
http://www.treeworld.info/
This is a new site operated by Eric Frey (Ekka) in NSW. The site is a great source of info and conections for all the professionals, amateurs, recreational climbers and even homeowners can ask questions there. The site is free to join and his information is timely, clean, friendly and very educational. Nice climbing and safety videos too! Great location for all climbers.

Hi Aussie
re TCI stuff- in 06 I did all of Tengu's classes in Oregon. I am currently very close to facilitating guided climbs here in brisbane. Having delays with permission to use land.
Starting a site/blog for rec climbing is Aus its treeclimbers.com.au still under construction.
One of my aims is to have a climber finder type forum for aussie climbers.
I know of a few other qld rec climbers that dont post.
One work mate said \"rec climbing? is that thing you do where you're not getting paid?\"

Cheers

hey hey !

i'm looking to learn tree climbing in North QLD, australia..

it doesn't seem to exist up this way, but maybe i haven't found that special group of people just yet.

am i better of just doing an arborist type course @ TAFE ?

;)

Caldera, Welcome to the site
Get in touch with Erik (EKKA) at TreeWorld.com in Brisbane and he can point you some directions to get some proper training. Their site is mostly targeted to Arborist work but they can point you in the right direction in your area. B)

thanks 'oldtimer-youngheart'

I've made contact with a crew in brizzy, and they've just given me a lead up north .. lets hope this equates to me learning how to climb trees soon enough.

I know there are heaps of people into tree climbing down south, especially in the activist circles...

tafe is very good... but if your only interested in rec climbing its prob not ideal for you as you will have to sit through alot of other non climb related stuff...

I took a trek to the Blue Mountains area close to Sydney last year and there are definitely nice climbable trees there!
If you want to learn by yourself and are not able to connect to a local Arborist or Climbing School down-under I suggest to order the Tree Climbers Companion by Jeff Jepson and the Basic Tree Climbing Video from Peter Jenkins at TCI forthe Double Rope Technique and read it several times specially the parts about Tree Selection and Safety and get yourself some gear from a Reputable supplier Down under or here in the the US. You will be hooked on Tree Climbing safely in not time at all.
Just be careful, take it low and slow and double check everything twice. It will take a bit longer to figure it all out but it is not impossible to do. ( I did it myself eight years ago and I love it ever since.)

If you need more info on gear selection, sources in AZ and opportunities to meet other climbers, EKKA at TreeWorld.com is a good Source in Brisbane.
Take Care and Good Luck
