Yes! That's what I'm talking about! Winter camping, giant sequoias in the snow. As soon as I get some money again I'm coming out to climb those West Coast giants! (Seriously.)

How big was that tree? Did you need permission?

Michael

p.s. I now tie a 0.5 litre water bottle to the bottom of the rope with a Blake's to weigh the rope down when I start SRT.

Close to 300' is near the max. for Sequoiadendrons isn't it?

As for the don't ask don't tell policy: I like it and so the the Forestry Commission - after I gave my talk to the RFS at the Lake Vrynwy tree last month Mike Whitley told me to climb first and tell them about it (and the height) later. There isn't a problem with lots of ninja climbs here and they've seen that I don't do any damage.

The limbs in that Giant Sequoia were nice and horizontal - not like the one I climbed in 2008. I had to double-wrap the lanyards around every limb, which made slack-tending very difficult.

I'd certainly like to come out to the West Coast soon and Sequoias would definitely be on my itinerary - there's something about the huge trunk and the undulating furrowed wall of bark together with the herbal aroma that makes them magical to ascend (and I've only climbed a couple of tiny ones around 130').
